PREVENTION WEEK IN COLLABORATION WITH SAMHSA RECAP

What is National Prevention Week?

Sponsored by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), National Prevention Week is a national public education platform showcasing the work of communities and organizations across the country dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of substance use prevention and positive mental health.
We recognize that the important work of prevention happens every day. SAMHSA created National Prevention Week to celebrate these year-round initiatives and the possibilities prevention brings. This year, National Prevention Week will take place May 7 to 13.

What are the main goals of National Prevention Week?

• Involve communities in raising awareness of substance misuse and mental health issues, implementing prevention strategies, and showcasing the effectiveness of evidence-based prevention programs.
• Foster partnerships and collaborations with federal agencies and national organizations dedicated to
improving public health; and
• Promote and disseminate quality substance misuse prevention and mental health promotion resources and publications.



 


















 Monday 5/8/23:

Event: Prevention Week Kick-Off! With Prestige Healthcare Resources

Distribution of 100 Harm Reduction Gift Bags to the community

These included Narcan, Condoms, Toothbrushes, Toothpaste, Bars of Soap, Information for Local Services and more!

Distribution of 100+ Meals to the community

Music and collaboration with local providers such as DC Prevention Center’s Ward 7 & 8, Psychiatric Institute of Washington D.C., Behavioral Health Group DC, Faith Based Leaders of Wards 7 & 8, Oxford House, Ambassador Church

Free Testing for Hepatitis, A1c etc was also offered by HBI DC




Tuesday 5/9/23:

Event: Prestige We Care!: Prevention Week Student Contest Day (Virtual)


Partnered with Schools in Washington D.C., Baltimore City and Prince George’s County MD

Students were instructed to submit Essays/Poems/Art/Graphic Designs that..

•Creatively express what they can do to help prevent substance use and/or promote mental health in their communities.  

School outreach and education was done the week prior to help align understanding.



Wednesday 5/10/23:

Community Health & Wellness Fair Maryland


Partnered with local agencies to promote awareness and resources to SUD & MH Programs in the area.

Distribution of 30 Harm Reduction Gift Bags to the community

These included Narcan, Condoms, Toothbrushes, Toothpaste, Bars of Soap, Information for Local Services and more!



Thursday 5/11/23:

Community Mental Health & Problem Gambling Awareness Day: Baltimore City


Partnered with Stadium Middle School in Baltimore City to provide educational presentations to youth. Discussed prevention, stigmas, mental health, substance use, problem gambling, addiction and how these topics relate to one another. Performed Narcan demonstrations, completed SAMHSA Prevention Week crossword puzzles, and discussed what they can do to help efforts in their community!


Friday : Rescheduled for 5/19/23 Due to Accrediting Agency Visits


Prestige Staff Event: “Reducing Stress & Promoting Wellbeing”


Staff will participate in a fitness class, gain knowledge on stress reduction methods and discuss nutrition and wellness in a group setting outdoors.
