WOMEN OF THE WEEK 3.6.23
Bebe Moore Campbell was an American author, journalist, teacher, and mental health advocate who worked tirelessly to shed light on the mental health needs of the Black community and other underrepresented communities. She founded NAMI-Inglewood in a predominantly Black neighborhood to create a space that was safe for people to talk about mental health concerns. On June 2, 2008, Congress formally recognized July as Bebe Moore Campbell's National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month to bring awareness to the unique struggles that underrepresented groups face regarding mental illness in the US.
Dr. Rebecca Lee Crumpler was the first Black woman to earn a medical degree in the United States. A true pioneer, she battled deep-seated prejudice against women and African Americans in medicine. After earning her degree in Boston, she spent time in Richmond, Virginia after the American Civil War, caring for formerly enslaved people. In 1883, Dr. Crumpler published her Book of Medical Discourses. It chronicles her experiences as a doctor and provides guidance on maternal and child health.
Dr. Nura Green Lane is a fourth generation Washingtonian. She currently manages the DC Opioid Response for the Wards 7 and 8 DC Prevention Center by providing technical assistance, grants management, drug trend surveillance, and opioid prevention, education and harm reduction best practices to community partners and stakeholders, including, families, youth and seniors and faith leaders. Dr. Sheron Travers serves as the Chief Operations Officer of Prestige Healthcare Resources Inc. She has served in this role since 2020. This included the management and care of staff while balancing the administration of mental healthcare of thousands of DC citizens in ward 8. Dr. Travers is not afraid to enact change.
